How the SMSTS Course is Assessed

The SMSTS course assessment is multifaceted, designed to evaluate a delegate's understanding and ability to apply health and safety principles in real-world scenarios. The assessment typically involves:
► Continuous Evaluation: Throughout the five-day course, participants are continuously assessed. This includes active participation in group exercises, discussions and case studies. Performance in four core exercises is also a key criterion. The course tutor provides an overall review of the delegate's engagement and comprehension.
► Final Examination: The course culminates in a formal examination. This is primarily a multiple-choice test designed to measure understanding of the key concepts covered during the course. For online courses, the assessment may also include multi-response questions and short written answer sections based on real-world scenarios and health & safety case studies.
► Attendance Requirement: Full attendance of all training course sessions is mandatory to successfully complete the course.
► Passing Mark: Candidates are generally expected to score at least 81% in the final multiple-choice exam to pass. If a delegate scores less than 69% (22 correct answers out of 32) in the final exam, they must attend the full course again before being permitted to re-sit the exam. Delegates can re-sit assessments at the next available opportunity in accordance with CITB rules.
Greatest Challenges for First-Time SMSTS Learners
While passing the SMSTS course is very achievable with the right training and preparation, first-time learners may encounter certain challenges:
► Volume of Legislation: The course involves a significant amount of health and safety legislation that delegates need to go through and understand. This can be particularly challenging for those new to the intricacies of UK health and safety law, including the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and CDM Regulations.
► Level 3 Qualification: The SMSTS is a Level 3 qualification, meaning it is aimed at professionals who ideally have some existing knowledge or experience in construction. While prior experience is not mandatory, those without it might find it more demanding to apply the theoretical concepts to real-world scenarios.
► Intensive Nature: The course is typically delivered over five consecutive days in a "block" format, which can be intensive and tiring for some learners. Alternatively, the "day release" format, spread over five weeks, requires consistent weekly attendance, which some may find difficult to maintain focus over a longer timeframe.
► Application of Knowledge: The course requires delegates to develop and apply safe methods of working, which goes beyond just understanding laws. It demands comprehension of how to reduce common accidents and injuries across various site hazards like working at height, electricity, excavations and demolitions.
How to Prepare for the 5-Day SMSTS Course
Effective preparation can significantly enhance a first-time learner's experience and chances of success on the SMSTS course:
► Familiarise Yourself with Legislation: Before starting the course, it is highly recommended to familiarise yourself with general health and safety legislation and key concepts relevant to construction. This foundational knowledge will help you absorb the more detailed information presented during the course.
► Ensure English Language Proficiency: All course materials and the exam paper are in English. A good understanding of spoken and written English is essential for effective participation in discussions, written assignments and the final assessment.
► Gain Industry Experience (if possible): While not mandatory, having some experience in the construction industry can make it easier to apply the course concepts to real-world situations and understand the practical implications of the training.
► Commit to Full Attendance: The course requires full attendance of all sessions. Ensure your schedule allows for this commitment, whether you choose a block or day-release format.
► Prepare for Online Learning (if applicable): If opting for an online course, ensure you have a reliable internet connection, a device with a camera and microphone, and a quiet, suitable learning environment. CITB requires full visual participation in online courses.
► Practice with Test Questions: Practicing with SMSTS test questions, including multiple-choice and written answers based on real-world scenarios, can significantly boost confidence and help prepare for the final exam.
► Engage Actively: Be prepared to participate in interactive training sessions, group discussions, and practical exercises. Active engagement helps in deeper understanding and retention of information.
By understanding these aspects and preparing accordingly, first-time SMSTS delegates can approach the course with confidence, ensuring they gain a genuine and applicable understanding of site safety management.
