SMSTS Refresher Classroom Based Courses
The Site Management Safety Training Scheme Refresher, or SMSTS Refresher classroom course, enables site managers to brush-up on their site safety and maintain their SMSTS qualification. SMSTS is a qualification created by CITB to establish a clear industry-wide standard for the management of health and safety on construction sites, and is the Approved Code of Practice for construction regulations. It is considered to be a key requirement for anyone who wants to be a site manager.
SMSTS Refresher Prerequisite Entry Requirements
The 2-day SMSTS Refresher classroom course is only available to delegates who have previously passed the full 5 day Site Management Safety Training Scheme (SMSTS) CITB course. Delegates must be able to provide proof of their full SMSTS certificate to be eligible for the two-day SMSTS Refresher course. The delegates current SMSTS OR SMSTS Refresher certificate must not have expired or they will need to re-take the full five-day SMSTS course.
► A valid SMSTS certificate gained in the last five years. You must take this course before your certificate expires
► To be able to read, write and understand English to a good level. Please contact us if you have any concerns in this area
► You will need to provide a valid ID on the first day of the course, such as a copy of your passport or driving licence
► If you need to re-sit the test, you must do this within 90 days of the original course date at an additional charge

► It's designed to structure the notes you take throughout each day of your SMSTS Refresher course

#3 - Completing the 2 day SMSTS Refresher course
► RISK provide a daily learning framework - Each days agenda, the slide deck and any other relevant learning resource specific to the days lesson plan is accessible on the relevant 'day' menu tab within the Personal Learning Zone. This is especially useful to help you build your knowledge and understanding.
#4 - SMSTS Refresher course exam
On day 2 you will complete an exam
► Individual SMSTS Refresher exam papers are assigned to each course being taught
► On the day of your exam the tutor will hand out an exam paper. The tutor will guide all delegates through the format of the exam and exam process to ensure everyone understands what is required.
► The exam paper is made up of two parts and you have 35 minutes to complete the exam
Part A - 18 multiple choice questions worth one mark each
Part B - 7 written questions worth two marks each
After 20 minutes - you are allowed to access your downloads/notes to help validate or support your answers.
#5 - Sameday marking and results of your SMSTS Refresher course exam
► Your completed exam paper is marked by your SMSTS Refresher course tutor the day of the exam, this can take 40-60 minutes to complete the process.
You will have three possible outcomes:
► 81% or more gives you a PASS
► Score 71% or less and you will need to resit the whole course
► Score anything between 72% - 80% and you will be able to resit the exam that day. You get one more chance to achieve a pass. There is a different dedicated SMSTS Refresher re-sit exam allocated which is different to the exam taken earlier. If you fail to achieve a pass, you will need to resit the whole course.
If successful you will receive your digital certificate within 2 weeks.
At the end of the SMSTS Refresher course you will be able to:
► Implement all health, safety, welfare and environmental legislation affecting your daily work
► Implement new guidance and industry best practice
► State your duties and responsibilities with regards to health, safety, welfare and the environment
Certification for the SMSTS Refresher course is valid for 5 years.
To remain certified in this area, you will need to take another SMSTS refresher course before the expiry date on your certificate, otherwise the full course will need to be retaken.
