SSSTS Refresher Course Overview

The SSSTS Refresher course is designed for those who already hold a valid SSSTS certificate:

 To maintain your SSSTS certificate, you must successfully complete the 1-day SSSTS Refresher course before your current certificate expires.

 If, your certificate has already expired, you are not eligible for the refresher course. Instead, you must retake the full 2-day SSSTS course.

The SSSTS Refresher course reinforces existing knowledge and provides updates on the latest legislation, HSE guidance, and industry best practice.

Supervisors play a vital role in ensuring safety on site. This refresher course helps delegates maintain the confidence and competence to supervise effectively, promote a positive health and safety culture, and comply with their legal duties.

 

Morning Session: Legislative Updates and Core Principles

 Welcome and Introductions:
   
Course objectives and what's new.
   
Review of the Site Safety Plus scheme.

 Changes in Legislation and Approved Codes of Practice (ACOP):
   
Discussion of recent and impending changes to UK health and safety law.
   
Focus on key legislation, including the Health & Safety at Work Act (HASWA) 1974 and the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations (CDM) 2015, with a focus on a supervisor's responsibilities.
   
Overview of the Health and Safety Executive's (HSE) current focus and priorities.

 Revisiting Core Site Safety Concepts:
   
Principles of effective health and safety management on site.
   
Review of risk assessment and the importance of toolbox talks.
   
Accident Prevention, Reporting & Investigation, including updates to RIDDOR (Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations) 2013.
 

Afternoon Session: Practical Application and Final Assessment

 Hazardous Activities and Control Measures:
   
Refresher on safe working practices for common site hazards, including:
         Working at Height: A review of the Work at Height Regulations 2005.
         
Manual Handling: Best practices to prevent injury.
         
Site-Specific Hazards: Discussion of common hazards like electricity, noise and vibration.

 Environmental Management:
   
Updates on the Environmental Protection Act 1990 and managing site waste.
   
Basic strategies for preventing and controlling site pollution.

 Final Project/Case Study & Examination:
   
Delegates will complete a practical exercise based on a site scenario to demonstrate their understanding.
   
A 30-minute, multiple-choice and short-answer exam to test knowledge.
   
The exam is 'open-book' for the final 10 minutes, allowing delegates to use their course reference materials.

Assessment

 Multiple-choice test (pass mark: 80%)
 Tutor observation of participation in discussions and group exercises
 Delegates must pass the exam and attend the full day to renew their certificate
 

Certification

Successful delegates will receive a CITB SSSTS Refresher certificate, valid for 5 years. To remain valid, it must be refreshed before the expiry date of the current certificate.

 

Entry Requirements

 Delegates must hold a valid (unexpired) SSSTS certificate.
 Good understanding of spoken and written English.
 Attendance of the full 1-day course is required to qualify for renewal.
