SMSTS & Refresher Course Scheme Rule Changes 2018

CITB Site Managers Safety Training Scheme (SMSTS) announces new Scheme Rules Changes for 2018. Review our quick summary of the key changes impacting what you need to do to successfully complete the SMSTS & Refresher Courses in 2018.

The learning outcomes for SMSTS Course are still divided into 5 Modules:

  1. Health and Safety Law, CDM 2015, H&S Management Systems, Risk Assessments and Method Statements, Statutory Inspections, reporting of accidents and incidents and leadership and worker engagement.
  2. Health safety and welfare of the workforce, 1st Aid and emergency procedures, hazardous substances, asbestos, dusts and fumes, noise and vibration and manual handling.
  3. General site issues: site set up and security, fire prevention and control, electricity, plant and work equipment, lifting operations and lifting equipment.
  4. High risk activities: working at height, excavations, underground and overhead services, confined spaces and temporary works.

Main SMSTS Course changes are in the SMSTS course & Refresher Course assessment:

  1. Core Exercises and Case Study:
    1. The core exercises comprise of:
      1. Implementing health and safety legislation;
      2. Managers and supervisors responsibilities; and
      3. Site briefing.
    2. The case study will be based on site layout covering a range of potential site issues for a selected senario.
    3. Each of the four core exercises and case study will be marked as part of the tutor review out of 100 with and requirement to achieve a minimum of 70% in each exercise.

 

  1. End of Course Assessment:
    1. There is still and end of course assessment consisting of 25 questions to be answered in 30 minutes (20 mins closed book, last 10 minutes books can be used.
    2. There are now 20 multiple choice questions (1 question, 4 possible answers) worth 80 marks, and 5 short answer questions worth 20 marks.
    3. Pass mark for this assessment is now 80%, however, there are also embedded within the question paper 5 Safety Critical questions (these are marked on the exam paper with the letter SC for the candidate to see. If any of these 5 safety critical questions are answered incorrectly, regardless of whether or not and overall mark of 80% or more has been attained, the delegate will fail the exam.
