RISK have been working with CITB to adapt the SMSTS Refresher, which can now be delivered remotely via video conferencing - first course running Wednesday 22nd April, and regularly from then onwards.

How does the SMSTS Refresher work with remote learning?

Due to the current COVID-19 social distancing restrictions, class based training courses are not running. However the SMSTS Refresher is needed by anyone holding a valid SMSTS certificate who need to complete their SMSTS before the certificate expires.

The remote learning SMSTS Refresher course ensures that your SMSTS qualification remains valid. The course has been adapted to provide the same level of coverage of health and safety, welfare and environmental issues as the classroom version. It also covers all the information in relation to legal duties relevant to specific work activities. However, all this is delivered via video conferencing, which RISK will run and delegates booked on will be sent an invite to join.

What video conferencing software will be used for the SMSTS Refresher remote learning?

RISK have spoken with a range of buisinesses who have booked staff on the remote learning SMSTS Refresher course - and it's clear not all companies will use one platform. Whilst zoom appears to be the most popular, some businesses use Webex or Microsoft Teams, which is why RISK is setting up a mixture of courses using the different platforms. You will be advised on which courses are running when, when you call to book.

Here's how the Emergency SMSTS Refresher Remote Learning Courses will run in brief:

• Maximum on a course is 10 delegates
• Training delivered remotely using Webex, zoom, Microsoft Teams or another free video conferencing tool (course delegates must have access to a computer, laptop, tablet or phone that uses a microphone and webcam)
• Connection quality is the responsibility of the delegate
• Slide share classroom simulation, with tutor lead - so you'll see the slides, plus hear and see the tutor and other delegates on the course
• Adapted Learning materials available digitally, these are unique to RISK and have been developed to aid your remote learning
• One to one telephone support available during course, should there be questions you want to ask in private
• Photo ID must be provided prior to the start of the course

SMSTS Refresher is open to furloughed employees

Any furloughed employee can do the SMSTS Refresher training as this does not involve providing services or generating revenue. In fact Government guidance says that furloughed employees should be encouraged to undertake training.

So there is no better time to have your Site Managers and Site Supervisors undertake their 'refresher' training.

Dedicated company SMSTS Refresher Remote Learning Courses can be set up quickly

The emergency measures agreed with CITB have an enabled training course providers to set up and register a SMSTS Refresher remote learning course within two days of delegate registration. These emergency measures will be regularly reviewed but are intended to run until May 31st.
