Digitisation in the UK Construction Industry

In August 2019, well before the COVID-19 Crisis, a survey of construction leaders predicted 2020 to be tipping point for digitisation in the UK construction industry.

Increasing appetite for digitisation in the UK construction industry

The research was conducted by Coleman Parkes between May and June 2019, and involved telephone interviews of 200 people across different sectors of the construction industry. The findings demonstrate that despite 54% admitting the industry has been slow to adopt digital technologies, there is an increasing appetite for businesses operating across the lifecycle of the built environment to investment in new technology.

The key factors driving digitisation in the UK construction industry are based upon the benefits experienced by those who have already implemented digital management of key aspects of the lifecycle of the built environment.

Of the 200 interviewed the findings were:

Commercial Performance

  • 43% have increase in business win rates

COVID-19 has accelerated the digital ecosystem in the UK Construction Industry

The rapid transformation of the enforced lockdown changed how we behaved, how we interact as humans. The enforced social distancing has had a profound impact on how we adapted to communicate. It's resulted in video conferencing becoming the norm, even though it's been around for well over a decade. The UK Construction Industry is not going to simply ‘bounce back’. As we all pick up the pieces, it’ll be highly likely organisations will face increased costs for some time. As a result, efficiency and process automation will be vital to rebuilding, driving productivity up and delivering growth. The CITB remote online training is one example of how this impact of how 2020 will be the tipping point for digitisation in the UK Construction Industry.
