SSSTS Qualification: What It Covers, Who Needs It and Why

The Site Supervisor Safety Training Scheme (SSSTS) is one of the most widely recognised health and safety qualifications in the UK construction industry.

Designed and accredited by the CITB (Construction Industry Training Board), it ensures site supervisors and those moving into supervisory roles have the knowledge and confidence to manage safety on site effectively.

In an industry where safety is paramount, the SSSTS qualification provides the essential foundation for building a culture of compliance and protecting both workers and companies from unnecessary risks.

What Does the SSSTS Qualification Cover?

The SSSTS course is a two-day programme that combines interactive learning, case studies, and practical examples relevant to real construction site scenarios. It covers:

  • Health and Safety Law – Understanding the legal framework that underpins site safety, including employer and employee responsibilities.
  • Risk Assessments and Method Statements – How to carry out and monitor effective risk assessments and ensure safe systems of work.
  • Site Supervisory Skills – Practical guidance on supervising teams, leading by example, and ensuring safety standards are maintained on site.
  • Toolbox Talks – How to deliver effective safety briefings to your team.
  • Hazard Awareness – Identifying common site hazards such as working at height, manual handling, fire risks, and control of hazardous substances.
  • Environmental Awareness – Understanding environmental considerations and best practices.
  • Behavioural Safety – Encouraging a positive safety culture through effective leadership and communication.

At the end of the course, delegates sit a multiple-choice exam and complete a short written test to demonstrate their understanding. On successful completion, they receive a CITB-accredited SSSTS certificate, valid for five years.

Who Needs the SSSTS Qualification?

The SSSTS is aimed at:

  • Current Site Supervisors – Anyone already supervising a team on a construction site.
  • Aspiring Supervisors – Workers moving into or preparing for a supervisory role.
  • Team Leaders, Foremen, and Gangers – Anyone responsible for overseeing the work and safety of others.
  • Small Business Owners and Subcontractors – Those managing their own workforce on construction projects.

Essentially, if you’re responsible for a group of workers on site — even a small team — the SSSTS course is designed for you.

It is also worth noting that many principal contractors and large construction companies now require an SSSTS certificate as a minimum standard for anyone in a supervisory role.

Why is the SSSTS Qualification Important?

  1. Legal Compliance Employers have a legal duty to ensure supervisors are competent. Holding the SSSTS demonstrates both individual and company commitment to meeting these obligations.
  2. Improved Safety on Site The training equips supervisors with the tools to identify hazards, manage risks, and implement safety procedures that reduce accidents and incidents.
  3. Career Progression For individuals, SSSTS is often a stepping stone to further qualifications such as the SMSTS (Site Management Safety Training Scheme). It strengthens your CV and enhances your credibility as a leader.
  4. Employer Confidence Companies benefit from having qualified supervisors who can enforce safety standards, protect their workforce, and ensure projects comply with CDM Regulations and other legislation.
  5. Reputation and Competitiveness A strong safety record not only protects workers but also improves a company’s reputation with clients, helping secure future work.

Keeping Your SSSTS Qualification Current

The SSSTS certificate is valid for five years. To maintain it, supervisors must complete the SSSTS Refresher course before expiry. This ensures knowledge remains up to date with the latest legislation, industry practices and safety expectations.

The SSSTS qualification is more than just a training course

SSSTS is an essential foundation for safe and effective site supervision. For supervisors, it offers confidence, credibility, and a clear pathway to career progression. For employers, it ensures compliance, reduces risk, and builds a stronger, safer workforce.

If you’re stepping into a supervisory role or already managing people on site, SSSTS is the qualification you need to prove your competence and commitment to safety.
