Do you or your staff need to be health and safety qualified?

Do you or your staff need to be health and safety qualified?

Did you know that as an employer, you must appoint someone competent to help you meet your health and safety duties.  This could be an external consultant, or an individual within your organisation.

“A competent person is someone who has sufficient training and experience or knowledge and other qualities that allow them to assist you properly.”

If you have fewer than five employees you do not have to write down your health and safety policy - but you still need an appointed competent person.

The financial, moral and legal obligations argument for IOSH Managing Safely

As a business owner and employer you have a legal responsibility to follow statute law, the Acts and Regulations. You also have a moral duty to ensure that your employees do not become ill or injured in the workplace. However, any accident in the workplace will have a financial consequence, a small accident can result in lost time to the business which can inadvertently affect productivity and profits. So, if you do not have a competent person in-company who can help support your health and safety management, you are putting yourself, your people and the business at risk.

Why choose IOSH Managing Safely?

IOSH Managing Safely gives an increased awareness of health and safety procedures, as well as how best to implement them. This real world application facilitates creating a safer working environment as the classroom learning is applied to the workplace. This in turn provides managers with the confidence to drive health and safety performance within their teams and improve the health and safety culture of the organisation as a whole.

The IOSH Managing Safely course content

The IOSH Managing Safely Course comprises of a 3 day intensive taught component followed by 2 written assessments. The two assessments consist of a short examination and a risk assessment project conducted within the workplace.

  • Health and safety responsibilities and accountabilities
  • How to assess and control hazards and risks effectively
  • Accident and incident investigation
  • Measuring health and safety performance

The IOSH Managing Safely course assessment

There is a 45 minute multiple choice test at the end of the course, together with a workplace health and safety risk assessment assignment, which must be completed within 2 weeks of doing the test. On successful completion of the assessment you will get an IOSH Managing Safely Certificate.

But how does an IOSH Managing Safely Certificate benefit the business?

On successful completion of the course, your management staff will have the knowledge and an internationally recognised and respected IOSH Managing Safely certificate. Achieving IOSH accreditation benefits both the individual and their employing business by helping to improve health and safety awareness, therefore minimising risk; allowing employees a safe place to work; providing delegates with the opportunity to take on further responsibility.  The more people in your organisation with a recognised health and safety qualification, the more benefits you are likely to recoup.
